How to Test a Gift Card

Test how gift cards work in your store without making an actual payment.

Just want to see the email and the redemption?

You don't need a purchase for that. Issue a card by hand to your own email address, then redeem it at checkout. Use the steps below when you want to test the full buying flow on your storefront.

1. Create a test discount

  • In Shopify admin, go to Discounts → Create discount
  • Choose Amount off products
  • Set value to cover full price (e.g., 100%)

2. Select the gift card product

  • Under Applies to, choose Specific products
  • Select your gift card product (the one you chose or created in Installation & Setup)

3. Complete a test purchase

  • Go to your storefront, open the gift card page, pick a design and amount, enter your own email as the recipient, and add the card to the cart
  • Apply the discount code at checkout
  • The total becomes $0, so you can complete the order without payment

If the gift card page doesn't appear, check that the app embed is on (see Check the app embed later) and that the gift card product is Active.

4. Test the gift card

  • Check your inbox for the gift card email. If you chose a future delivery date, it arrives on that date. To see where a card is in the process, open the Recent gift card queue on the home page.
  • Use the code during checkout on a normal order to confirm it works

5. Clean up

  • Return to Discounts in Shopify admin
  • Deactivate or delete the test discount

This method ensures you can fully test the gift card purchase and redemption process without charging your store's payment method.
